Urlesque takes a look at 54 cereals from the 80s that were once loved but are no more. There are so many of these that I know were staples in our house when I was a kid like:
- Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cones – fake little corn rounds that look like scoops of ice cream and corn cake cones
- Rocky Road – corn nuggets covered in chocolate and marshmallows
- Smurf Berry Crunch – essentially Cap’n Crunch Berries in red and blue a la Papa Smurf
- Teddy Graham Breakfast Bears – you might as well just have taken a box of Teddy Grahams and popped them in a bowl of milk
- WWF Superstars – corn stars that you only bought because Hulk Hogan was on the cover
- S’mores Crunch – marshmallows with a Golden Grahams-like mix
The list even includes some rare favorites like Urkelos (a “Family Matters”-inspired cereal with Steve Urkel’s mug on the box) and New Kids on the Block cereal (don’t even know what the cereal was – but who cares – it hyped you up on enough sugar to sing “Step By Step” for hours on end).
As I read this list, my mind rushed back to the 80s and 90s when I grew up and I soon remembered one of my favorite cereals – Kellogg’s Bigg Mixx Cereal. I remember my mom putting it in plastic bags so she could have snacks on hand for me after swim practice. It was a granola-like mixture with raisins, rolled oats, rice and corn flakes. It’s mascot was this strange hybrid of a moose, pig and chicken who hailed from Yakima, Washington, and was named “Bigg Mixx.” The cereal was released around 1990 and only was on store shelves for about two years. So sad.
This list reminded of another 80s treat that I’m not sure a lot of people remember – Burple. It was a Kool-Aid-like drink but it was sold in this accordian-esque containers that burped. Check out the commercial:
I don’t know what is the best about this commercial – the one boy’s Kid ‘N Play haircut, the leggings or the neon colors. Still, I remember begging my mom to let me buy this at the grocery store and loving making the container burp as I shaked it up.

Oh, do you remember Smurf marshmallows? They were blueberry flavoured marshmallows. soooo good. I was hoping they’d bring them back now that there’s a new Smurf movie out. No such luck. 😦
It’s not edible, but you could get a Smurf toy in McDonald’s Happy Meals. I was just walking through the cereal aisle the other day – kids’ cereals just aren’t the same anymore. -sigh-
I wish I still had my wind-up smurf village from back in the day. P.S. Found your blog by googling smurf marshmallows! 🙂
I wanna try Chocolate Chip.
