Review: Red’s Kitchen and Tavern

Red's Kitchen and Tavern exterior signI’m always on the lookout for the next best place for breakfast. I’d have to say breakfast is – by far – my most favorite meal of the day. If I had my way, more places would just specialize in breakfast 24/7. Because honestly, who doesn’t like an omelette for lunch sometimes or some pancakes for dinner?

Well, there’s a new place to get breakfast (and those other two meals a day) on Boston’s North Shore. Red’s Kitchen and Tavern opened earlier this summer and has been busy.

But, let’s take a step back about 50 years and start over in Salem, Mass. This is where Red’s Sandwich Shop first gained a loyal, local following. The sandwich shop stands in a building that dates back to the 18th century and has served meals to many over the years. Based on that popularity, it was a natural progression to open up a second location. Flash forward to May 2012, when the second location – Red’s Kitchen and Tavern – opened up on Route 1 in Peabody, Mass. This location is spacious and new. So, let’s take a look inside…

Review: Kashmir Indian Cuisine of New Hampshire

Kashmir Salem NH exteriorThe building may look worn down on the outside but once you’re inside Kashmir Indian Cuisine in Salem, N.H., you’ll be surprised at what you find. We came across this little bit of the subcontinent thanks to a recommendation from some good friends, and boy, are we happy they suggested it!

As you enter the restaurant, you’ll find a small bar area and where the weekend lunch buffet is situated. The main dining room is through a small passageway where you’re whisked away to a calming, yet casual dining space with windows covered in drapes of flowing fabric.

Recipe: Garlic Scapes and Basil Pesto

A few weeks ago, we joined a CSA, or “Community Supported Agriculture,” with Farmer Dave’s based in Dracut, Mass. Each Monday, we pick up a share of fresh crops in Beverly, just a little hop from our place in Salem, Mass. The variety of veggies is different each week and depends on field conditions. For instance, this week we had beets, spinach, yellow and green zucchinis, fennel, Swiss chard, lettuce and more.

It’s more than enough produce for the two of us. It is also great since it makes us eat more healthy. We can get creative with our meals (I made some beet cupcakes with an orange cream cheese frosting from our second week’s crops), and we support local farmers.

We especially like the last part after watching documentaries like “Food Inc.,” which details how the government regulates the U.S. food supply. Plus, with the rising cost of fuel, those increases are then transferred to all of our food purchases. So, if we can buy locally, we save a little in the end by not buying produce from across the country or that is out of season. We always know what we have is fresh and local. It’s a good feeling to know that you’re supporting a local, small business, too.

Review: The Upper Crust Pizzeria in Salem

Upper Crust pizza box.When I went to school in downtown Boston, I visited the Beacon Hill location of The Upper Crust Pizzeria once and really enjoyed their freshly made calzones. Now, that we’re back in the area, it was a great relief to know that The Upper Crust has expanded their restaurants to the suburbs, including the Salem area.

One (snowy) night, we decided to get pizza delivery.

The takeout and delivery menu is full of specialty pizzas and ample toppings so you can create-your-own ‘za. Pizzas can be made “red,” with sauce, and “white,” without sauce. They also have whole wheat pizza dough.

Review: Passage to India

Bookshop in historic Salem, Mass.Brett and I walked around historic downtown Salem a few weeks ago before Snowmageddon hit. The town is full of quaint little shops and eateries. So, we decided to drop into one spot for a bite of Indian cuisine.

Passage to India is located on Washington Street. We were lucky enough to sit right next to one of the restaurant’s huge windows so we could take in all the people walking by.

We don’t indulge in Indian food too much – sometimes it wreaks havoc on hubby’s tummy if the chef overindulges in some of the spices. But on this trip, we didn’t have any troubles.
