Cupcake Camp Boston 2012

Registration is now open for amateur bakers to take part in Cupcake Camp Boston 2012 in Somerville, Mass. Last year’s event was an awesome experience for me and my baking-partner-in-crime, Miss Stacey. (Check out my review of the 2011 shindig. It was a sugar rush and a half!!)

Now, if you’re a cupcake baker who wants to take part, stop by the website by April 25. The event will be held 6 p.m. on Monday, May 21, at the Armory in Somerville. Last year, attendees (not those baking, but devouring the tastees) forked over a small donation to benefit an area food pantry. Warning: Get there early if you want a chance at all of the goods! (You have been warned!) The event also features tons of sweets from Boston-area bakeries. Last year, some of the pro bakers were: Babycakes, the Cupcakory, Treat Cupcake Bar and more.

I plan on baking some interesting chocolate mashed potato cuppies…I hope to see you at Cupcake Camp 2012!! Be sure to follow my Tweets @crelacion where I’ll post more pix on the day of the event, too!

Rockin’ Cupcakes: A Social Media Case Study

Rockin' Cupcakes signBack during Christmas when I was finishing up some gift shopping, I stumbled upon a new cupcake spot at North Shore Mall in Peabody, Mass. Of course I had to snap some pictures when I saw this new little spot so I could feature it on the blog.

As soon as I took out my camera and started grabbing a few pictures of the cupcakes and signage, the person on-duty asked (in a rather condescending and snappish tone) if I was going to post these online or if I’m getting ideas for recipes. I responded that, yes, I probably will post the photos online since I like taking photos of food as well as to get new ideas.

Most times, when I take photos of a merchant’s food, I’m greeted with huge smiles or anecdotes about the product, simply out of their sheer pride. Other times, I get the raised eyebrow and a shrug to just continue taking photos. Never have I received this sort of response with rude undertones, so I was somewhat taken aback by her attitude. We decided to step back, linger a bit longer and take a closer look at the goods…

Review: Sugar Mags

Sugar Mag's exteriorI heard about Sugar Mags from a coworker when I was asking where to find a great breakfast, not a mediocre one like so often I have been accostomed to recently. So, when she recommended a little spot in nearby Gloucester, Mass., I was intrigued.

Voted Boston’s Best Breakfast in 2008 by “Boston Magazine,” Sugar Magnolia’s is a hot little breakfast spot located about 30 minutes north of downtown Boston in the city that is famous for being portrayed in the Mark Wahlberg/George Clooney movie “The Perfect Storm.” Gloucester is a little fishing town that has a picturesque harbor and Main Street vibe.

The breakfast menu is full of hearty dishes and staples like pancakes, French toast, hash, omelets, crab cakes and more.

Let’s take a closer at look inside:

Review: Kane’s Donuts

Kane's Donuts exteriorsLiving in New England you become accustomed to seeing a Dunkin’ Donuts on every other corner (if not every corner). It almost feels like heresy when you step into another donut establishment. However, that isn’t the case when you walk into Kane’s Donuts in Saugus, Mass.

Located off the beaten path on Boston’s North Shore, Kane’s Donuts has been frying up doughy goodness since 1955. It’s even been recognized by Travel Channel as a “Donut Paradise.

“Bon Appetit” magazine has also recently named Kane’s Donuts one of the Top 10 Places in the U.S. for Donuts. So let’s take a look inside:
