Review: Kane’s Donuts

Kane's Donuts exteriorsLiving in New England you become accustomed to seeing a Dunkin’ Donuts on every other corner (if not every corner). It almost feels like heresy when you step into another donut establishment. However, that isn’t the case when you walk into Kane’s Donuts in Saugus, Mass.

Located off the beaten path on Boston’s North Shore, Kane’s Donuts has been frying up doughy goodness since 1955. It’s even been recognized by Travel Channel as a “Donut Paradise.

“Bon Appetit” magazine has also recently named Kane’s Donuts one of the Top 10 Places in the U.S. for Donuts. So let’s take a look inside:

Gourmet vacation and treasure hunt from Andrew Zimmern

Mix together social media, food, a tropical getaway and a celebrity chef …what do you get? A chance to win a gourmet trip to Mexico this fall from Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmern and Travel Leaders.

Using Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites, contest participants will find the clues so they can find the place in Milwaukee where the grand prize trip tickets are located.

“I have accumulated so many frequent flyer miles that I decided to give some of them away in a creative way to someone here in Milwaukee,” said Zimmern, who hosts “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern” on Travel Channel. “Knowing how much I love to travel and explore different locations, I want to give them to someone who has a sense of adventure, a love of travel and a passion for the Greater Milwaukee Area.”

The grand prize for the participant who interprets the clues and finds the prize will be a Mexico vacation package from Travel Leaders and Funjet Vacations.  The winner will receive roundtrip airfare and stay at the El Dorado Seaside Suites by Karisma in Riviera Maya. The seven-day trip features an all-inclusive gourmet food menu available 24-hours a day during the trip.

Finding the tickets won’t be easy, but it should be fun. Participants must correctly answer trivia questions about Milwaukee, travel and Andrew Zimmern, and fill in a puzzle. More details about the contest, and the actual clues, are available at www.paradisepursuit.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ParadisePursuit and Twitter at www.twitter.com/ParadisePursuit.

The first trivia question is: What Milwaukee baseball player has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom? (Hint: He’s also known as the Hammer.)

Zimmern will be in town at Alterra on Prospect Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 30, to give the prize away to the winner.

Good luck hunting, Brew City!

Food Wars Preview: AJ Bombers

It’s almost here. On Wednesday night, Travel Channel’s “Food Wars” pits two Milwaukee restaurants’ cheeseburgers head-to-head. AJ Bombers and Sobelman’s Pub & Grill will be featured in the new episode that was filmed a few months ago.

In anticipation of the show, I recently visited AJ Bombers for a taste of what they’re dishing out.

Yeah, I Ate That Series: The German Pancake

Dutch Baby at Original Pancake House

Dutch Baby at Original Pancake House

Call it a German Pancake, a Dutch Baby, or apfelpfannkuchen (I’m guessing that’s German for something?), but whatever you call it, it must include awesome or mind-blowing in the description.

I first came across the Dutch Baby on the menu at The Original Pancake House, a breakfast chain that originates in Oregon. Celebrated chef James Beard (a Portland, Oregon native) named it one of the Top 10 best restaurants in America. According to the restaurant’s website, in 1999 the James Beard Foundation named OPH a regional landmark restaurant.

OPH’s Dutch Baby is an oven-baked delight. But beware, it takes at least 30 minutes for this bountiful goodness to arrive at your table. The main ingredients are eggs, milk, flour, eggs, and some seasonings like vanilla or cinnamon, more eggs and still more eggs. I asked once at OPH how their rendition gets so fluffy and tall. The trick? Using a blender and a bit of their famous pancake batter. The blender aerates the batter creating a fluffy mixture that then bakes in an oven for quite a while. Top it off with some lemon juice and powdered sugar and the result is magic in your mouth.

The perfect burger

BurgersI was at a networking event last night and the topic of burgers came up. I mentioned how Kopp’s has the BEST butter burgers anywhere in my opinion. Someone replied (and this was in the Chicago area), “You mean not Culver’s?” My heart raced. I started a cold sweat.

“No, not Culver’s.”

The Kopp’s butter burger starts with the bun. It’s the perfect bun-to-meat ratio. Their huge slabs of burger fill the bun up. I hate those wimpy burgers that don’t even come close to the sides of the bun. Then, they have this cheese. I don’t know what it is because it’s not quite American and it’s not quite cheddar but it melts perfectly. It stays congealed to the burger in a way that I haven’t seen replicated anywhere and I have tried it at home to no success. I don’t think they steam their cheese to get it to the proper consistency so I would love to know what they do.
