Review: Fresh-A-Peel Inside Pollo Campero

Exterior of Pollo Campero at Downtown Disney in FloridaSeriously, it seems like it’s been decades since I was last at Disney World. In reality, it’s only been about two months since my brief little work-cation allowed me to drop by Downtown Disney and Epcot.

I flew into Orlando early in the day so I had the remaining hours to myself (as I didn’t have any work duties until the next morning). So, after checking into my (non)-Disney hotel near the airport, I took a little nap since the hot, humid Florida weather was such a drastic difference for me.

I decided to spend the rest of my day going to the Premium Outlet Mall, as I had heard that Disney runs a retail store there. I wanted to check it out so I drove on over. While there were some great deals on T-shirts and gear for the little Mickey-philes, nothing overly piqued my interest. After, I drove down Hotel Plaza Boulevard, a winding, tree-lined avenue that flows directly into the Marketplace at Downtown Disney.

There have been tons of changes at Downtown Disney within recent years – especially to its dining options. Most of the times, we don’t make it anywhere else but Earl of Sandwich and Ghirardelli. As I was on a limited diet (no dairy products) at this time, I opted to try the eats at one of DD’s newest establishments that took over the spot that once was the McDonald’s. Let’s take look inside Fresh-A-Peel at Pollo Campero...

Review: Five Guys Burgers & Fries

The Washington Post called them the “Willa Wonkas of Burgercraft” in a review, and they have been Zagat-rated for nine years. With monstrous burgers and ridiculously large portions of fries, Five Guys Burgers and Fries recently opened a new location at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wis. The national chain now has six Milwaukee-area locations, and in 2010 is looking to open up 200 more chains across the US.

Five Guys entrance at Mayfair MallThe Mayfair location opened in the storefront formerly occupied by The Sharper Image and a Laacke & Joys seasonal location (for longtime Milwaukee residents you might also remember it was once home to Mr. Bulky’s candy store), across from Panera Bread on the shopping center’s first floor. The restaurant has an indoor mall entrance and an outside sidewalk entrance.

Food Wars Preview: AJ Bombers

It’s almost here. On Wednesday night, Travel Channel’s “Food Wars” pits two Milwaukee restaurants’ cheeseburgers head-to-head. AJ Bombers and Sobelman’s Pub & Grill will be featured in the new episode that was filmed a few months ago.

In anticipation of the show, I recently visited AJ Bombers for a taste of what they’re dishing out.

The perfect burger

BurgersI was at a networking event last night and the topic of burgers came up. I mentioned how Kopp’s has the BEST butter burgers anywhere in my opinion. Someone replied (and this was in the Chicago area), “You mean not Culver’s?” My heart raced. I started a cold sweat.

“No, not Culver’s.”

The Kopp’s butter burger starts with the bun. It’s the perfect bun-to-meat ratio. Their huge slabs of burger fill the bun up. I hate those wimpy burgers that don’t even come close to the sides of the bun. Then, they have this cheese. I don’t know what it is because it’s not quite American and it’s not quite cheddar but it melts perfectly. It stays congealed to the burger in a way that I haven’t seen replicated anywhere and I have tried it at home to no success. I don’t think they steam their cheese to get it to the proper consistency so I would love to know what they do.
