Review: The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

The savannah at Animal Kingdom LodgeEditor’s Note: This post is featured as part of the Disney Blog Carnival No. 43. Check it out for more posts on all things Disney!

A stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort is a pure adventure as we found out on our most recent vacation. The sprawling hotel is full of amenities and jaw-dropping vistas of the resort’s own savanna. Waking up from a room here, is like waking up in the middle of Africa. You can find a giraffe outside your patio one morning and a herd of zebras on the next.

Animal Kingdom Lodge has several different spots to satiate those elephant-sized hunger pangs you work up after walking in the parks all day. There are the three sit-down restaurants – Jiko, Boma and Sanaa – plus the quick service eatery, The Mara.

Let’s take a closer look today at The Mara…

Holiday Inn Express Pancake Machine

Pancakes in a MinuteFile this post under weird things I have eaten. What do you get when you cross a conveyor belt with one of the most beloved breakfast foods?

Holiday Inn’s express pancake machine. This counter-top appliance churns out one pancake every 18 seconds. So, how does it work? Well, thanks to a trip to Brattleboro, Vt., for Christmas, I got to see first-hand how this gadget works.

According to Hotel F&B magazine, an industry publication for hoteliers, the flapjack maker was rolled out to all of Holiday Inn Express’s 1,800 North American hotels in early 2011. Each machine comes with bags of premade mix that each make 35 pancakes. The batter drops onto a Teflon-coated belt, which lasts for about 60 bags of batter or approximately 2,100 pancakes. (Wow, that’s a lot of syrup!)

Review: Sugar Mags

Sugar Mag's exteriorI heard about Sugar Mags from a coworker when I was asking where to find a great breakfast, not a mediocre one like so often I have been accostomed to recently. So, when she recommended a little spot in nearby Gloucester, Mass., I was intrigued.

Voted Boston’s Best Breakfast in 2008 by “Boston Magazine,” Sugar Magnolia’s is a hot little breakfast spot located about 30 minutes north of downtown Boston in the city that is famous for being portrayed in the Mark Wahlberg/George Clooney movie “The Perfect Storm.” Gloucester is a little fishing town that has a picturesque harbor and Main Street vibe.

The breakfast menu is full of hearty dishes and staples like pancakes, French toast, hash, omelets, crab cakes and more.

Let’s take a closer at look inside:

Review: Kane’s Donuts

Kane's Donuts exteriorsLiving in New England you become accustomed to seeing a Dunkin’ Donuts on every other corner (if not every corner). It almost feels like heresy when you step into another donut establishment. However, that isn’t the case when you walk into Kane’s Donuts in Saugus, Mass.

Located off the beaten path on Boston’s North Shore, Kane’s Donuts has been frying up doughy goodness since 1955. It’s even been recognized by Travel Channel as a “Donut Paradise.

“Bon Appetit” magazine has also recently named Kane’s Donuts one of the Top 10 Places in the U.S. for Donuts. So let’s take a look inside:

Yeah, I Ate That Series: The Cyclops

It has been QUITE awhile since I have written a piece for the “Yeah, I Ate That Series.” I was thinking today about one of my favorite over-the-top dishes back in the Milwaukee area.

There is a little diner on North Ave. in Wauwatosa called Daymaker Cafe. Brett and my brother took me for my birthday in 2010 (that was also the same day I tried Pat’s Rib Place the first time – fabulous day overall.)

I’m a huge lover of pancakes – buttermilk, whole wheat, Dutch Babies, crepes – if it’s any type of pancakes, I love it. Plain. And. Simple. (That could also be why I packed on about 30 extra pounds in the past five years, but I digress.)

Daymakers makes The Cyclops. The best way to describe it is like the “Peekhole Sandwich” I wrote about recently on my Mom’s birthday but with a pancake. Make a large pancake, cut a hole in it, stuff it with sausage and egg. Voila! A Cyclops!

Cyclops from Daymakers CafeWhile not everything on the menu is a magical, mythical creature like the Cyclops, they do offer other fabulous offerings. I do remember grabbing plenty of bites of Brett’s “Pretzel-Bread French Toast” that is served with peanut butter syrup.
