Being Proactive With Nutrition As A Cancer Patient

If you’re a regular reader to the blog, you’ll know that sometimes we discuss my own personal health struggles living with fibromyalgia, chronic anemia and migraines. But today we venture away from those ailments to hear from Jillian McKee, an advocate from the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. She has healthy eating tips for people with cancer.

Unfortunately, in today’s world one of the sad realities is that most people in some way have been affected by cancer. It has either taken away a loved one or a friend, or affected him/her personally. For me, my husband’s mother was taken by the evil C-word when he was a child. It also recently stunned the life of a dear friend.

While there is no cure for cancer, there are treatments to help combat it. But after the chemo and other therapies of modern medicine, some times people want to try other methods to improve their life and well-being. There are complementary and alternative treatments – such as dietary changes – to help a person be more proactive and take control of his or her health.

Take it away, Jillian…

The Updated Eating Restructuring Plan

Sorry it’s been so long since my last regular post. I’ve had some strange stomach bug nagging me the last several weeks, leaving me with only wanting to nibble on some dry, white toast. I must say…a stomach bug must be the worst things for foodies. It’s like our kryptonite. At long last, I’m feeling better with a more normal appetite.

I have also started to see a dietitian. Since the fibromyalgia diagnosis last fall, I started a new medication to help with my bouts of insomnia and broken sleep. However, it caused a bit of weight gain that overpowered some of my eating restructuring plan success of the last year.

So, my dietitian has me on a diet of 1,500 calories a day. No restrictions on carbs or other food groups, just keeping track of my portions. I have also taken to keeping a food journal. I find if I have to write it down, I carefully think about picking up that cookie or pudding cup first.

During my first visit I set the goal to lose 8-10 pounds by May 8 (my next appointment). My overall goal is to lose 10 percent of my body weight, which would put me around 150-155 pounds. Currently, I’m down 4 pounds since my first visit and I have about two weeks until my next appointment.

Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at one of the first recipes we tried to help me keep eating healthy! Be sure to check back – because this one is a keeper!

Weigh-in: Through Week 4

Well, I made it to 30 since the last time I wrote an “Eating Restructuring Plan” update. The best news is that Brett gave me the bestest gift for my b-day – a 4-day cruise on the Disney Dream to the Bahamas and Castaway Cay next December! That gives me about 300+ days to get in 2-piece body condition.

Yes! You heard right! I’m going to try and tone my body so I can wear a 2-piece for the first time in my life. I don’t know if it will happen but with all the Zumba on Wii that I have been doing lately, it is a good possibility.

And yes, I did get Zumba for Wii…and it’s AMAZING! I forgot how much that workout – for even 15 to 20 minutes – kicks your butt. I like how the game gives you various level options from beginner to expert. So someone like me who has done Zumba before can opt for higher level workouts, while Brett, who admirably is learning how to shake his little groove thing, gets quite a vigorous workout on beginner.

Here’s a little video of me doing the beginner routine “La Twist de la Munequita:”

Weigh-in: Through Week 2

Weight Update - Week 2It has been almost three weeks since I started my “Eating Restructuring Plan” for 2011. As you can see from the scale shot on the right, I have successfully gone down a few pounds since my last weigh-in. It’s always good when the pounds drop off. But I can’t say that it’s been easy.

It’s especially hard after the holidays to shed those bad habits of nicking a few sweets or eating a slightly too large plate of something really yummy. While I don’t indulge in sodas as much as I used to (both regular and the diet variety), I do like something in the morning that can keep me going throughout the day. So, I turn to a coffee or chai drink. After you end up pouring in those flavored creams and sugars, that coffee or tea (which has few calories on its own) becomes a beverage full of empty calories.

To combat this bad habit, I’ve switched to drinking flavored teas sans cream or sugar. If I do drink coffee and use some flavored creams, I make sure to only use the suggested serving amount. While that French Vanilla or Chocolate Creme tastes fantabulous, it’s best to keep it to one drink per day.

We have a Keurig coffee machine at my office. So, I found some Apple Cider and Chai K-cups that are pretty tasty. But, they still have a lot of sugar in them. I just have to remind myself – only one a day!
