Favorite Fall Foods

I love autumn. Besides all the bad migraines it brings me each year, I absolutely love the changing colors on the trees, the pumpkin and apple cider drinks, going to the pumpkin patch and wearing chunky wool sweaters with boots.

Today, we stopped at Starbucks to enjoy some of their new fall offerings. I totally indulged in their new salted caramel mocha. Wow — this drink is smooth! Brett enjoyed a (decaf) pumpkin spice latte, which was equally autumnal.Apple Cider Donut from Mann OrchardsThen, we dropped by Mann’s Orchards and Bakery for some of their apple cider donuts. Just stepping out of the car, we were accosted by the warm, inviting smell of these yeasty treats. They were absolutely incredible! A sugary coating and a fluffy interior. I’m just drooling thinking about what these would be like right out of the fryer.

So, what’s your favorite fall food? Leave a comment below!

My First Cheesecake

Caramel Apple CheesecakeFall is my absolutely, positively favorite time of the year. I love the crispness in the air. Wearing chunky sweaters and corduroy pants. And, the taste of apples.

Red delicious. Granny Smith. Macintosh. I love them all.

I hope to conquer my fear of baking my first apple pie later this fall (with the help of my buddy Stacey from Boston Sweetie), but this week I tackled my first cheesecake recipe – a caramel apple cheesecake with candied pecans from a recipe in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A few weeks ago I purchased my first 9-inch springform pan so I knew I must make this recipe as soon as possible. Continue reading

Add Giada to Your Next Dish

Giada De Laurentiis and Bobby SchuesslerI am off today to San Francisco for the Scleroderma Foundation’s National Patient Education Conference. In the meantime, I have a new guest blogger who recently met one of Food Network’s most-beloved celebrity chefs (and she’ll be cooking for Prince William and Princess Catherine later this week in L.A.). By day, Bobby Schuessler works in NY at Lucky Magazine but today he’s filling us in on some of Giada De Laurentiis’ new cookware for fall available at Target.

Take it away, Bobby!

“Now sprinkle some mozz-u-rrrrela,” Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis exclaimed as she finished making her famous dish for a group of (hungry) magazine editors.

Editors from top publications (including myself) had the honor to gawk at the Italian-American chef as she introduced her new fall products of her Target cooking line. The new line complete with everything from a sleek food processor to beautifully packaged sun-dried tomatoes and pastas had everyone in the room buzzing, not to mention salivating (maybe just me) as she served her perfectly made dishes.

Recipe: Whole wheat pumpkin banana bread

Pumpkin is the perfect taste in fall. It’s warm and comforting. You can have it savory in something like a ravioli or make it sweet in pies or cookies.

I had a bunch of bananas that were nearing the end of their life-cycle recently and wanted to see how pumpkin and banana paired together. The verdict: Surprisingly well.

I found a recipe online for a healthier version of a whole wheat flour and pumpkin banana bread on Balanced Health and Nutrition, a blog by Rebecca Scritchfield. The only change I made to the recipe was to use plain whole wheat flour (I haven’t been able to find whole wheat pastry flour near my house yet.)

I wish I had a picture of the bread to post. I’ve made it twice this month and both times the bread didn’t make it long enough to pose for the camera. I promise to add a photo of the bread if I make it again soon!

More Disney Halloween treats

The chefs at Disney Parks are busy concocting spooky and eerie sweet treats for the Halloween season. You might remember a little while ago I posted about the gingerbread haunted house that’s in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, but the Disney Parks Blog recently showcased some other great treats that are available in the parks for this ghoulish time of year!
