Product Review: Yonanas

yonanas description flierA few weeks ago, I told you that I was having issues with a stomach bug. Well, it turns out it’s not a stomach bug but some other undiagnosed issue. At the moment, I’m under doctor’s orders not to have any dairy, until further notice. A super-hard task for a Wisconsin girl, who is used to a daily diet that includes a healthy amount of cheese, yogurt and milk. So, I have a few weeks until my first colonoscopy – which will hopefully lend some clues to why I’m not feeling well. The thought right now is that it possibly could be Celiac Disease, or a gluten intolerance. I’ll keep you posted because it will definitely change the tone of this blog if I do end up having some sort of food allergy.

Now, I still have a pretty healthy appetite – and that includes my sweet tooth. For the most part I’ve been really good – I’ve snuck a few pieces of chocolate here and there, as well as some small nibbles of frosting from cupcakes. But, I do miss my frozen yogurt and ice cream, even my morning Kefir smoothie.

So, we decided to buy this as-seen-on-TV gadget called Yonanas, based on a recommendation from my friend Stacey. You simply need to freeze those overripe bananas that you were going to toss in the garbage or bake into banana bread. Then, you can add other frozen fruits, peanut butter and other add-ins for a frozen treat that comes out in the consistency of soft serve ice cream. If you don’t use bananas in the mixture, but just frozen fruit – like strawberries, blueberries, or mangoes – it comes out in a sorbet texture.

Ben and Jerry’s Schweddy Balls

So I was testing out my new iPhone. Well, the good news is I can post about great food finds on the road. Bad news is that I accidentally sent my email subscribers a blank email. So sorry!

Anyway, I found this great find in the ice cream section and wanted to share.

Ben & Jerry’s newest flavor available in select markets is Schweddy Balls. Inspired by the “Saturday Night Live” skit with Alec Baldwin. The rum flavored ice cream has chocolate malt balls and rum balls. Delish!

Foodie Destination: Ghirardelli Square

Ghirardelli Square SignNo trip to San Francisco is complete without taking a few nibbles of chocolate from those chocolate dream-makers at Ghirardelli. However, Ghirardelli isn’t just one store. It’s an entire square just steps from the Bay City’s waterfront, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

I have never been to SF before so when I found I’d have a little free-time after a work conference, I had to make the most of it. Trolley ride, dim sum and a stroll through Chinatown, and a famous Ghirardelli hot fudge sundae straight from the source.

I’m no stranger to Ghirardelli’s decadent treats. I’ve enjoyed their sundaes already at their locations at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World and on the Miracle Mile in Chicago. Ghirardelli’s sundaes are special because theyLombard Street in San Francisco make their own hot fudge and you can select milk or dark chocolate. The result is a dessert that will have you licking up every last morsel of fudgy goodness.

After being coaxed into a little second story restaurant in Chinatown and enjoying a quiet, yet great dim sum meal, I took the old-fashioned cable cars down to the wharf area. Our trip took us past Lombard Street, the famous avenue with eight hairpin turns. The end of the Powell-Hyde Cable Car line is just a short, two-block walk to Ghirardelli Square.

Review: Richardson’s Ice Cream

Little cow at Richardson's Ice Cream in Middleton, Mass.Well, the winner of “Write the Caption Challenge 2,” is Ms. Erin Hareng with:

“Don’t eat meat! Cows are too cute!”

You won’t find any meat where that cutie-patootie little baby cow is located. However, you will find fresh, tasty and velvety smooth ice creams.

The place is Richardson’s Ice Cream in Middleton, Mass., where the Richardson family has had a farm for more than three centuries. Yes, three centuries.
