Italian Beef and Fries at Dr. Dawg

Dr Dawg exterior in Glendale.Late in 2010, Dr. Dawg opened up on Milwaukee’s north side. I really enjoyed their Chicago-style hot dogs with all the fixins and Sprecher root beer on-tap. A little while later, I went back to test out the Doctor’s Italian beef.

Can I get an “Mmm, good”?

Dr. Dawg’s Italian beef comes in three sizes: 5-inch, 7-inch and “Da Big 12.” Slow-roasted, paper-thin slices of tender beef are piled high on a cushy, fresh Italian roll. Also slathered on top of the sandwich is your pick of sweet peppers or spicy giardiniera.

The Best of 2010

El Beso construction photoEverywhere you look this week it seems that someone is doing a recap of the past year. I’ve been doing this food blogging experiment for nearly six months. It has been more successful than I could have imagined – many thanks to all of my friends and family for passing along links and giving me a good word.

I wanted to say goodbye to 2010 by taking a look at the 10 most popular posts from the past year.

1. New La Fuente location opens today
The most popular blog of this year – many thanks to Google and a Milwaukee contingency that loves its Mexican food – was a link to the Journal Sentinel’s coverage of the opening of the new Tosa La Fuente.

2. Yeah, I Ate That: The turkey leg
This was a little post I put together based on a scrapbook page from my honeymoon album. It got a lot of coverage thanks to AJ at the Disney Food Blog and the folks at the Disney Blog Carnival.

3. Construction update: El Beso Mexican Restaurante
Another indication that Milwaukee loves its Mexican food. Who knew? I was in the Greenfield-area doing some book shopping and snapped a few photos for this third most popular post of the year.

Dr. Dawg opens in Glendale

Dr Dawg exterior in Glendale.Dr. Dawg, a hot dog/fast food restaurant, has opened a second location in Glendale, Wis. Owner David Ross already has a popular location in Manitowoc, Wis., but this new location on N. Port Washington Road brings a slice of Chicago to Milwaukee’s North Shore.

I love the bio that Ross has on his website. The doctor, as he’s called, says this about himself:

I grew up in Chicago during the era of the explosion of the Hot Dog industry. After serving in the Marines in the mid-sixties, I started my first business of towing cars. This gave me the incredible opportunity of learning the whole city/suburbs of Chicago and also experiencing all the great Hot Dog stands along the way. I found that I became particularly aware of every nuance and detail that separated the good from the really great stands. I was immersed in the Hot Dog culture and now consider myself an aficionado and connoisseur of the Chicago style Hot Dog.

…I’ve always dreamed of owning my own Hot Dog stand. Recently, I’ve earned my PhD (Professor of Hot Dogs) at the famed Hot Dog University. Not too long ago, HDU was acquired by Vienna Beef, LTD. This is “The Harvard of Encased Meats.”

…Now, finally, after all these years, I’m proud to fulfill my dream. I am passionate about Hot Dogs and look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you.
