Review: The Scotty Dog – Beverly

The Scotty Dog exteriorWe recently left our apartment in Salem, Mass., for a place in Beverly, Mass., just a few minutes north. As we were moving, I noticed The Scotty Dog – a little place serving up Chicago-style hot dogs.

This hot dog stand opened earlier in 2011 on scenic Route 1A. It has a handful of parking spots for car hop service, plus several picnic tables and Adirondack chairs.

Check-in: 6 New England Things to Try

Shortly after we moved back to New England I made a list “6 New England Things to Try,” that was comprised of some of the region’s most beloved items. In the little over a half a year since we have been year (where has 2011 gone!?), I am 2/3 of the way through my list.

Here’s a little bit of a check-in with my progress and some thoughts:

Lobster Roll

Inspired by Adam Richman’s trip to Maine on an episode of “Man v. Food,” one of the must-try items on my list was the lobster roll. Chunks of fresh lobster mixed with a little bit of mayo and piled high on a roll.

Being one of the top things I needed to try, I had been asking around for recommendations since moving back to Mass., which garnered some great tips from long-time locals. One weekend, Brett and I ended up at The Beach Plum’s Portsmouth, NH location delving into a huge sandwich.

Review: The Philly Way

Philly Way ExteriorEven though I’m in New England now, I still have a few reviews of Milwaukee-area restaurants to post. Today, let’s take a look at a great sandwich stop near downtown.

The Philly Way has two locations – the original, situated under the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower on S. 2nd St., and the newest spot on S. Packard Ave. in Cudahy, Wis.

The first location opened in December 2002 by Philly transplant Dave London, who once worked at Pat’s in South Philly.

Today, many Philly natives and cheese steak connoisseurs post their reviews on sites like Urbanspoon and Yelp saying that The Philly Way is as close to the real thing as you can get.

The menu is quite simple. Cheese steaks made with shaved beef, grilled onions and your choice of other toppings like mushrooms, cheese, and sweet or hot peppers. The Philly Way also does chicken cheese steaks, burgers and hot dogs.

Dr. Dawg opens in Glendale

Dr Dawg exterior in Glendale.Dr. Dawg, a hot dog/fast food restaurant, has opened a second location in Glendale, Wis. Owner David Ross already has a popular location in Manitowoc, Wis., but this new location on N. Port Washington Road brings a slice of Chicago to Milwaukee’s North Shore.

I love the bio that Ross has on his website. The doctor, as he’s called, says this about himself:

I grew up in Chicago during the era of the explosion of the Hot Dog industry. After serving in the Marines in the mid-sixties, I started my first business of towing cars. This gave me the incredible opportunity of learning the whole city/suburbs of Chicago and also experiencing all the great Hot Dog stands along the way. I found that I became particularly aware of every nuance and detail that separated the good from the really great stands. I was immersed in the Hot Dog culture and now consider myself an aficionado and connoisseur of the Chicago style Hot Dog.

…I’ve always dreamed of owning my own Hot Dog stand. Recently, I’ve earned my PhD (Professor of Hot Dogs) at the famed Hot Dog University. Not too long ago, HDU was acquired by Vienna Beef, LTD. This is “The Harvard of Encased Meats.”

…Now, finally, after all these years, I’m proud to fulfill my dream. I am passionate about Hot Dogs and look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you.
