Review: Woodman’s of Essex

Woodman's of Essex ExteriorBefore I went to Woodman’s of Litchfield (New Hampshire) last year, I had no idea, until doing a little followup research for a blog post, that its parent restaurant Woodman’s of Essex (Massachusetts) was the birthplace of the fried clam.

But, back in 1916 this little roadside seafood shack started the craze that goes up and down New England’s shores with a frenzy. Today, the restaurant is run by the third and fourth generations of the Woodman family. The lines are still long, the clams are still hot, juicy and oh-so-good.

So, let’s take a closer look at this Massachusetts mainstay…

Check-in: 6 New England Things to Try

Shortly after we moved back to New England I made a list “6 New England Things to Try,” that was comprised of some of the region’s most beloved items. In the little over a half a year since we have been year (where has 2011 gone!?), I am 2/3 of the way through my list.

Here’s a little bit of a check-in with my progress and some thoughts:

Lobster Roll

Inspired by Adam Richman’s trip to Maine on an episode of “Man v. Food,” one of the must-try items on my list was the lobster roll. Chunks of fresh lobster mixed with a little bit of mayo and piled high on a roll.

Being one of the top things I needed to try, I had been asking around for recommendations since moving back to Mass., which garnered some great tips from long-time locals. One weekend, Brett and I ended up at The Beach Plum’s Portsmouth, NH location delving into a huge sandwich.

Hello, Boston!

Well, I have safely made it to my new abode just outside Boston, Mass.

Hubby and I have settled in lovely Salem (yes, that witch trial place). From what I’ve heard, I just need to take Halloween off because hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city like crazies. Hmm, I’m getting flashbacks to some nights at Summerfest…

I know it has been much too long since my last post. Some unforeseen interweb connectivity issues have needed to be fixed. Still not 100% right, but hopefully we’ll be getting there soon.

Because of those issues, this post won’t have the usual photos and multimedia. (I hope I can add some at a later date…) But, I couldn’t wait to post and talk to you all so as promised, here I am with my Top 10 List of food-related things that I can’t wait for in Boston/New England:

Foodie Destination: The Barking Crab

Recently, I’ve been remembering our most recent vacation to Boston. We enjoyed so much fantabulous food from Mike’s Pastry in The North End (another post coming soon) to clam chowder at Legal Seafoods and desserts at Finale. But the best by far was a dinner at The Barking Crab.

Now, going back seven years to when I first moved to Boston. My brother wanted to try The Crab. Having no knowledge of how good the food was and basing my decision solely on it’s location, I thought any restaurant “on the docks,” was slightly sketchy. So we passed and ended up at a mediocre take-out Chinese restaurant in Allston. (I highly doubt it’s still in business and probably is a furniture store by now.)

Flash forward to last year when we saw The Barking Crab on Travel Channel’s “Man v. Food.” Adam Richman traveled to Beantown’s harbor to enjoy their famed clambake. To my surprise, you can find legitimate dining experiences on the docks, harbors and other generally seedy areas. (I’ve come quite a long way in seven years.) In this video, WCVB’s news magazine “Chronicle” takes a peek at The Barking Crab.
