Review: Sonny’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q

Sonny's BarbecueI have been forever spoiled for all other barbecues because of Pat’s Rib Place. I really wanted to like Sonny’s Barbecue in Lakeland, Fla. I really did. After protesting for years to go with my brother, I finally convinced my hubby and father-in-law to check it out after a day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and before our drive back to Tampa.

During my teen years (well before I became a barbecue fan), I refused to eat anything barbecue. My brother still regrets not just going to the Sonny’s near Kissimmee and just having me fend for myself as a picky eater. Alas, we ended up – probably – at some chain restaurant for a generic hamburger or sandwich instead.

In some sort of repentance for my young naivety, I tried to make up for my misdeeds and check out this barbecue joint that has been on my brother’s wishlist for years. Sadly, I can’t say it would live up to the pedestal that he has placed it on. So let’s take a closer look…

Hello, Boston!

Well, I have safely made it to my new abode just outside Boston, Mass.

Hubby and I have settled in lovely Salem (yes, that witch trial place). From what I’ve heard, I just need to take Halloween off because hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city like crazies. Hmm, I’m getting flashbacks to some nights at Summerfest…

I know it has been much too long since my last post. Some unforeseen interweb connectivity issues have needed to be fixed. Still not 100% right, but hopefully we’ll be getting there soon.

Because of those issues, this post won’t have the usual photos and multimedia. (I hope I can add some at a later date…) But, I couldn’t wait to post and talk to you all so as promised, here I am with my Top 10 List of food-related things that I can’t wait for in Boston/New England:

Review: Pat’s Rib Place

Exterior of Pat's Rib Place in WaukeshaEditor’s Note: Oprah Winfrey announced Jan. 24, 2011, that she has a half-sister. Pat’s Rib Place and it’s owners – Alisha and Tydus – were mentioned on the show.

I first heard about Pat’s Rib Place in Waukesha from a coworker. She told me that the barbecue rivaled some that she had in Memphis. A few weeks later for my 29th birthday, Pat’s Rib Place was the place I wanted to go. Today, it’s a hidden gem that I want to share with more people.

Pat’s Rib Place opened its doors in July 2009. Located on Sunset Drive, the restaurant isn’t your typical strip mall find. It’s owned by Alisha and Tydus Hayes, and named for Alisha’s mother who died in 2003. The restaurant’s walls are lined with family pictures (and some of patrons), so you get the real sense that this is a family-run operation and that your meal is made with love.

Tydus is a native of Tennessee and the head chef. Alisha is often seen in the front of the house – taking orders, wiping down tables and checking that guests enjoy their meal.
